Mused: Nomi Ruiz

Known for transforming the unknowns into stars (Rico "Zombie Boy", and to some extent Lady Gaga), Nicola Formichetti has plucked his latest muse, transgender singer Nomi Ruiz, from Brooklyn. You can spot her in the campaign film for Formichetti's latest Mugler menswear collection (she's the one vamping on the bed in the bondage scene), and her band, Jessica 6, did the soundtrack for part of the movie as well as the show. Formichetti also styled Nomi for a spread in the forthcoming issue of V, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. In the corresponding interview, Ruiz talks about her transformation from man to woman, which had the unexpected side effect of free caffeine: "I just remember people being nicer to me and offering me free things all the time ... I would go to the bodega and get a coffee and the guy would be like, 'No, it's on me.'" Hey, who can deny a free coffee! If you have it, use it.
Also be sure to stay tuned for my Mugler menswear 12 post. There were some great effects on the runway that can not go unnoticed!
